Checking your tyre tread depth takes less than 2 minutes and could save your life. Here's how to do it properly — plus what to do if your tyres are getting dangerously low.
In the UK, the legal minimum tyre tread depth is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tyre. Driving below this limit can result in a fine of up to £2,500 and 3 penalty points per tyre. More importantly, insufficient tread depth seriously impairs braking and handling — particularly in wet conditions.
The quickest way to check tread depth at home is the 20p coin test. Take a 20p coin and insert it into the tread grooves at several points around the tyre. If the outer rim of the coin is visible above the tread, your tyre depth is likely below 1.6mm and you need urgent mobile tyre fitting.
For a more accurate measurement, a tyre tread depth gauge (available from any motorist shop for a few pounds) inserts directly into the groove and gives a reading in millimetres. Check at multiple points around the tyre's circumference and across its width.
While the legal minimum is 1.6mm, the AA and most tyre safety organisations recommend changing tyres at 3mm. At this depth, wet braking performance begins to degrade noticeably. Response Mobile Tyres recommends assessing tyres from 3mm and planning replacement before they reach the legal minimum.
If your tread depth is approaching 3mm or has already reached 1.6mm, don't wait. Call Response Mobile Tyres for immediate mobile tyre fitting at your location — we'll come to your home, workplace, or roadside anywhere across Scotland, 7 days a week.
