Some garages and tyre fitting services offer nitrogen inflation instead of regular compressed air. Is there a real benefit? We separate fact from marketing when it comes to nitrogen tyre inflation.

Nitrogen tyre inflation has been used in motorsport, aviation, and commercial trucking for decades. But is it worth it for everyday passenger car use? Let's look at the evidence.

The Case For Nitrogen

Nitrogen molecules are larger than oxygen molecules, so nitrogen-filled tyres lose pressure more slowly — typically 30-40% more slowly than air-filled tyres. Nitrogen is also dry (air contains moisture), meaning the internal tyre temperature remains more stable and there's less risk of moisture-related rim corrosion.

For infrequent checkers or drivers who cover many miles between services, nitrogen can help maintain pressures closer to the optimum for longer.

The Case Against (For Most Drivers)

Standard compressed air is already approximately 78% nitrogen. The additional benefit of pure nitrogen is therefore incremental, not transformational. The key discipline — checking tyre pressure monthly — is far more impactful than the choice of inflation gas.

Nitrogen-filled tyres with green valve caps also create a practical problem: if a tyre needs topping up in an emergency, standard air at a petrol station will dilute the nitrogen content, defeating the purpose.

Our Verdict

For most Scottish drivers, the best investment is regular pressure checks with standard compressed air. If you never miss a monthly pressure check, you will rarely see measurable benefits from nitrogen over air. However, for drivers who are disciplined about nitrogen-only top-ups, it can offer a marginal advantage in pressure retention.

All Response Mobile Tyres fitting vans use high-quality compressed air for tyre inflation as standard. If you have a specific requirement for nitrogen inflation, please mention it when booking.
