While emergency tyre repair will always be a part of driving life, there are steps you can take to significantly reduce your risk of punctures. Here are eight practical tips.

No tyre is completely puncture-proof, but with the right habits you can significantly reduce the likelihood of needing emergency tyre repair or roadside assistance. Here are eight practical tips from the team at Response Mobile Tyres.

1. Maintain Correct Tyre Pressure

Under-inflated tyres flex more, run hotter, and are more vulnerable to damage from sharp objects and road imperfections. Check your tyre pressure monthly and before long journeys.

2. Check for Embedded Objects Regularly

Before longer trips, walk around your vehicle and visually inspect the tyres. It's not uncommon to find a screw or nail embedded in the tread that hasn't yet caused significant air loss — catching it early means a simple repair rather than an emergency.

3. Avoid Road Hazards Where Possible

Potholes, kerb strikes, and road debris cause the majority of tyre damage. Where safe to do so, steer around potholes rather than driving through them. Even at low speeds, a pothole can pinch the tyre against the wheel rim and cause internal damage.

4. Don't Overload Your Vehicle

Every tyre has a load rating — the maximum weight it can safely carry. Overloading puts excessive stress on tyres, increasing heat and the risk of failure. Check your vehicle's maximum load in the owner's manual.

5. Replace Tyres Before They're Illegal

Worn tyres are far more susceptible to punctures and blowouts. Replace at 3mm rather than waiting for the 1.6mm legal minimum — the marginal cost saving isn't worth the increased risk.

6. Don't Use Tyre Sealant on Damaged Run Flats

Aerosol tyre sealant products can damage the tyre pressure monitoring system (TPMS) and may mask internal tyre damage. If you have a puncture, call Response Mobile Tyres rather than applying sealant.

7. Check Valve Caps Are Fitted

Valve caps prevent dirt and moisture from entering the valve core, which can cause slow air leaks. They're cheap, easy to replace, and worth checking whenever you check your tyre pressures.

8. Consider Puncture-Resistant Tyres

Several manufacturers offer tyres with additional puncture resistance built into the construction. While not puncture-proof, they provide enhanced protection particularly for those who frequently drive in areas with heavy road debris. Ask Response Mobile Tyres about available options during your next mobile tyre fitting.
